Science journals have featured countless stories about the evolution of the human brain. Scientists are puzzled since humans have much bigger brains than any other species. Their suggested explanations have often been mutually exclusive. For instance, the old text book explanation relied on eating meat but a few years ago an article in New Scientist, a popular science magazine, suggested that eating starch was the secret of brain growth. But both explanations fail to answer why other meat or starch eating species do not have big brains.

At the recent AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) annual meeting in Boston, Richard Lewontin, a distinguished biology professor at Harvard University, acknowledged that stories about human brain evolution have not been based on facts. Reporting on the meeting for the journal Science, Michael Balter quoted Lewontin as saying, "We are missing the fossil record of human cognition, so we make up stories." The title of Balter's article seems to be an admission of sorts: "How Human Intelligence Evolved--Is It Science or 'Paleofantasy'?"

According to professor Lewontin, it is fantasy. Lewontin suggests that there is much cause for pessimism in the study of human origins. Science reporter James Randerson of Britain's Guardian newspaper was even more brunt, saying, "We know nothing about brain evolution." Randerson went on to summarise Lewontin's reasons for pessimism. "The handful of hominid fossils stretching back 4m years or so" cannot tell us whether any of them were our ancestors. We "do not have the have the faintest idea what the cranial capacity [of a fossil hominid] means". Moreover, we do not even know which hominids walked upright and which did not.

Lewontin is well-known for his outspokenness. In 1997 he wrote in The New York Review of Books that scientists often choose to make up "unsubstantiated just-so stories" because they "have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism... Moreover, that materialism is an absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door."

Obviously, the scientific community cannot ignore Lewinton's recent conclusions. If the ruling paradigm (naturalism or the view that nature is all there is) leads us into a blind alley, might there be something wrong with it?

While bats cannot be kept as pets, there are ways to provide for them. One of these is by building a bat box which can work as an alternate roost for bats. There are many varieties of kits available for you to buy with instructions on how to build it. After its built, though, youll need the perfect location.

First, if bats can be seen in an area at dusk, the area is likely to be a good spot to support a bat box. The box should be placed at least ten feet above the ground with its opening facing south-southeast, and it should receive at least seven hours of direct sunlight.

Also, bats are more likely to choose a box that is within 1500 feet of a permanent stream or water supply, as bats need plenty of water. Another consideration is to locate the box within 30 yards of a tree line to provide cover from predators.

It is also important to note that the bat box will be primarily used only during the summer months by bats, and that if the box is disturbed in any way during the first summer of its placement, the animals may not return. When they choose a roosting place, though, they are likely to be annual visitors.

Bat houses were actually first invented in Pennsylvania and are used for a variety of reasons. They provide low maintenance, environmentally friendly insect control, and they can be used to coax bats out of areas where they are causing a problem. They also create a great opportunity for those wishing to be able to keep the animals as pets you can view the interesting creatures without damaging them.

Bat species in general have been in decline during recent years, due in part to the removal of old trees. In building a bat box, not only do you provide yourself with an interesting sight, but youll also be helping preserve the animals species!

According to the dictionary, the only thing that a pet requires to be considered an exotic pet is to be something that is not indigenous to a particular region. However, according to that definition, any poodle or even a little Cairn Terrier or even a Siamese cat would technically qualify as an exotic pet. Today, I am going to talk to you about Ball Pythons and their Breeding.

Ball Pythons reach their sexual maturity at around three years old or about 1000+ grams. The ideal weight for a breeding Ball Python is 1500+ grams. At this weight they are more likely to lay more eggs. In the Herpetology, we call eggs a clutch. Each female is different in that they do not lay the same amount from one to another. A normal clutch of eggs is around 6-7. A female in prime condition can lay around 10-12 eggs.

Breeding season in Ball Pythons starts when the temperatures drops and the Moisture level increases. I keep my temps at about 85 during the day and about 75 at night. This time usually occurs around November, and lasts till around January. Eggs are usually hatched out around April to May. Most breeders will artificially incubate the eggs to control temps and moisture better, although some will leave the eggs with the female to hatch them out. The problem with this method is it's hard to control the environment.

The overall time it takes from copulation to birth is about 7 months 21 days. This varies though, with when your introducing the female to the male and when you start changing the environment.
